AGÜ UZEM, a young center, was established in November 2021 both to manage the university's distance education activities and to help broader audiences benefit from higher education by overcoming the time and space limitations of formal education. It operates within the AGÜ Sumer Campus, which is located on the site of the Sumer Textile Factory—founded in 1935 to serve Turkey’s goals of industrialization and modernization. Just as this site historically played a significant role in the country’s development and keeping pace with the times, AGÜ, built on the grounds of the former factory, carries the mission of being a pioneer in achieving Turkey’s educational and developmental goals. In line with AGÜ’s mission, AGÜ UZEM also aims to honor its tradition while shaping the future in its own field.

The use of distance education—sometimes as an alternative to traditional teaching methods and sometimes to enable the participation of individuals who face difficulties accessing traditional education—is not a new development. However, the COVID-19 pandemic both accelerated the use of technology in education and made the shortcomings and possibilities of distance education more visible. Through distance education, people’s access to learning materials via the internet has not only accelerated the democratization and internationalization of education, but also offered opportunities to partially address educational inequalities. Nevertheless, distance education has not yet reached its full potential.
